Living Green with Anthem House: How to Celebrate Earth Day in Baltimore
Apr 17, 2019
April 22nd is Earth Day! The first Earth Day recognition was in 1970, when a march took place to protest the harmful effects of industrial development. A lot has changed since then, but it is still just as important to be conscientious about the Earth and make choices that are good for the environment and the future. Taking better care of our planet can start in our own neighborhood, so keep reading for some great Baltimore Earth Day events and tips!
Earth Day Around Bmore Over at Johns Hopkins, the PHSF (Public Health Student Forum) and CARE (Compassion, Awareness, and Responsible Eating) are hosting a giveaway on Earth Day at the Breezeway. They will have metal straws, reusable bags and eco-friendly snacks, so you won’t want to miss it! Also on the 22nd, animal lovers can participate in Earth Day Bird Banding with Baltimore Foodparks and Eric Fishel. There, you can observe local birds, celebrate green spaces, and learn about the planet! The event will be at the Ash Street Community Garden, across from 3510 Ash Street, at 9am. Anytime in April, stop by Federal Hill's Ace Hardware to save $10 on a clean-up kit! They are partnering with Trash Free Maryland, an organization who works to prevent litter and reduce waste in our state, to support #30daysofpickinguplitter. This initiative was started to encourage us to give back to our community by taking action against litter. The package includes gloves, a trash pick-up tool, and lawn bags—all you need to get started. Make a day of it with friends, and celebrate afterwards with a nice cold drink! Instead of red solo cups, use mason jars to serve up environmentally-friendly (and cute) cocktails. It’s Easy to be Green! There are a lot of little changes you can make that will add up to a big difference! One way is to BYOB: remember to bring reusable shopping bags with you to the store! Some places like Target, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s even offer discounts when you bring your own bag. Keep them in your car or purse so that you’ll always have them handy. Another way to cut back on plastic is by investing in a reusable water bottle. One resusable bottle can save you countless disposable ones. There are tons of trendy options available in your favorite color, like Camelbacks, Nalgenes, Swells, and Hydroflasks. You can also make your apartment an eco-friendly oasis. If you are crafty, try a fun projects to repurpose items you would normally throw out into decor! Check out Pinterest for some artsy inspiration. Another great option is a Brita faucet filter! Add one to your kitchen to make clean water as easy as turning on the tap. Are you going to be out of the apartment for a while? Change your thermostat or turn off the A.C. to save money, and energy!
