Baltimore Women-Owned Businesses to Support During Women’s History Month

Mar 10, 2021

Anthem House residents—did you know that March is Women’s History Month? The first National Women’s History Month was celebrated in 1987, and has continued to be celebrated throughout the ongoing fight for women’s rights. It’s always important to support women-owned small businesses, but especially now due to the effects of the pandemic.

Emma’s Tea Spot

Get a taste of Britain right here in Baltimore at Emma’s Tea Spot! Emma Canoles opened her Hamilton storefront after working as a restaurant manager in London with the goal of allowing her customers to connect with their environment, while giving them a “proper British experience” as well. Emma’s Tea Spot makes delicious treats from scratch and also has products imported from Britain, for an authentic British meal!

Foreman Wolf Restaurant Group

The Foreman Wolf Restaurant Group is home to some of the best restaurants in Baltimore, and is owned by Chef Cindy Wolf. Wolf is a nine-time James Beard Award finalist for Best Mid-Atlantic Chef, and has been recognized by Food and Wine, Bon Appetit, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. The restaurant group includes Charleston, Cinghiale, Bar Vasquez, Cindy Lou’s, Petit Louis Bistro, Johnny’s, Bin 604, and Bin 201.

Cosima

Cosima is known for delicious Mediterranean cuisine and is owned by Judith Golding. Golding has created an authentic Italian atmosphere that will make you feel like you are actually dining in Italy! In addition to running Cosima, Golding also volunteers for the Maryland SPCA.

Sally O’s

Former Top Chef contestant Jesse Sandlin opened Sally O’s in Highlandtown last year, and the restaurant has become one of Baltimore’s best! Sandlin is a self-taught chef and named her restaurant after her kitchen inspiration, her Grandmother, Sally. Sally O’s has a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere and a unique menu, so be sure to stop by for a meal!

Teavolve Café

Self proclaimed “hippie” Sunni Gilliam was inspired by the abundance of coffee shops in the area to open Teavolve in Fells Point in 2005. While Teavolve does serve coffee, the shop is known for its extensive tea menu with many different types of tea and tea-infused drinks! In addition to running Teavolve, Gilliam also gives back to the community, working with World Central Kitchen to provide meals for the elderly.

Greedy Reads

Julia Fleischaker worked in the publishing industry in New York for twenty years before opening her own independent bookstore, Greedy Reads. The shop is known for its diverse selection of books as well as hosting book clubs, discussions, and other author events. Greedy Reads is currently offering in-store shopping by appointment at both Fells Point and Remington locations.

American Visionary Art Museum

The American Visionary Art Museum in Federal Hill was founded in 1984 by Rebecca Hoffberger. Hoffberger began her career working as the Development Director of People Encouraging People in the psychiatry department at Sinai Hospital, and was inspired to encourage creativity and open the museum. Current museum exhibitions include The Secret Life of Earth and The Science and Mystery of Sleep.

B. Willow

After earning her Master’s in Environmental Science, Liz Vayda decided to turn her passion into a business by opening her own plant shop, B. Willow. Vayda was inspired by the positive effects of being outdoors that she learned about as a psychology major in her undergraduate studies. B. Willow offers a wide variety of plants and is open for in-person shopping, delivery, and curbside pickup!

Support Local

We hope you’ll take this March (and beyond) to support local, women-owned businesses in Baltimore. If you do, be sure to snap a photo and tag us.
